Tommy Hilfiger was born and raised in Elmira, New York as second of 9 children. He went to high school but didn’t continue an education and started to work in the retail business at the age of 18. Hilfiger went to New York City to buy jeans, customized them and resold them in a local store in his hometown. Later he opened his own store named the People’s Place but went bankrupt after 7 years when Hilfiger was age 25.

He moved to New York City and turned down Calvin Klein and Perry Ellis to be their design assistant, even though he was broke. Mr. Hilfiger had greater plans in mind. In 1984 he founded the Tommy Hilfiger foundation, introducing his signature menswear collection. Hilfiger was named Menswear Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1997. In 2006 Hilfiger sold his company to Apax Partners, a private investment company. In march 2010, the owner of Calvin Klein, bought the Tommy Hilfiger corporation.
Tommy Hilfiger has 4 children with his ex-wife Susie: Alexandria, Richard, Elizabeth and Kathleen. With his second wife Dee he has a son, Sebastian Thomas Hilfiger.
